Mary was born in 1830 in Birtle.1  Mary's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Mary Bridge.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Christopher, Hannah, Susey and Betty.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
