Esther was born on March 29th, 1823 in Bury and her christening took place on June 1st, 1823 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury) conducted by Curate Robert Yarkin.1  Esther's father was Samuel Mather and her mother was Alice Greenhalgh.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. She had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, Samuel, Richard, James, Mary and Alice. She had an adopted sister named Sarah.
