Alice was born in September 1838 in Bury.1  Alice's father was Samuel Mather and her mother was Alice Greenhalgh.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. She had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, Samuel, Richard, James, Mary and Esther. She had an adopted sister named Sarah.
