Richard was born on June 30th, 1827 in Bury and his christening took place on August 5th, 1827 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury) conducted by Curate Thomas Potter .1  Richard's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Alice Greenhalgh.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Robert, Samuel, James, Mary, Esther and Alice. He had an adopted sister named Sarah.
