Richard's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Alice Greenhalgh.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Robert, Samuel, James, Mary, Esther and Alice. He had an adopted sister named Sarah.
