James was born on July 24th, 1830 in Bury and his christening took place on August 3rd, 1830 conducted by Curate Thomas Potter.1  James' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Alice Greenhalgh.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Robert, Samuel, Richard, Mary, Esther and Alice. He had an adopted sister named Sarah.  He died before 1841 in Bury.
