William's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Annie Lilly.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and <Unknown>. He had two brothers and a sister, named Fred, Harry and Annie.  He was the second oldest of the four known children.  He died at 6 months old in May 1863 in Bury.  He was buried on May 28th, 1863 at All Saints (Elton).²
