Emma was born in March 1865 in Rochdale.1  Emma's father was Joseph Mather and her mother was Sarah Leach.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Grace Wood. She had eight sisters named Elizabeth, Grace, Mary, Mary, Ann, Sarah, Martha and Susan. She had an adopted brother named Jurshaw.
