Mary was born in June 1855 in Heywood.1  Mary's father was Joseph Mather and her mother was Sarah Leach.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Grace Wood. She had eight sisters named Elizabeth, Grace, Mary, Ann, Sarah, Martha, Emma and Susan. She had an adopted brother named Jurshaw.
