Elizabeth was born in September 1849 in Heap.1  Elizabeth's father was Joseph Mather and her mother was Sarah Leach.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Grace Wood. She had eight sisters named Grace, Mary, Mary, Ann, Sarah, Martha, Emma and Susan. She had an adopted brother named Jurshaw.
