Joseph was born in 1863 in Bury.1  Joseph's father was Edwin Mather and his mother was Jane Ann Barlow.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Grace Wood. He had two sisters named Emma and Elinor.  He was the youngest of the three known children.
