Then James (36), Betsy (10), Adam (6) and Thos (1) 1851: Thomas/James (43) & Mary Schofield (44) with Betty (19) & Adam (15). Also Mother Nancy (83) and Charles (36) Nancy Horrocks (widower) married John Knowles in 1805, but this may be another, as Nancy Horrocks was alive in 1841,1851 17 May 1830, if Mary Horrocks married John Booth of Oldham at Prestwich then there is a DNA match to frobins7. However, she was still unmarried in 1841. Alice probably married John Walmsley in 1805. It cant be Samuel and Alice Mather in 1810 as that would be her nephew. It cant be Alice and Hampson Lomax in 1813 as that Alice was a widow. Mary & Ann baptised Egerton Independant Which Ann Mather marriage ? However, appears to be son of John and Nancy Walmsley of Altham near Clayton-le-Moors, Great Harwood. Know each other: Both from Clayton-le-Moors Lives with: In 1861, Tabithja was living with her eldest married sister Rachael Harvey at Manchester. Representative of: In 1854, James Walmsley was witness to Mary's marriage. Relative of: Illegitimate Son (TBC) 1773 - 1853 Nancy Mather 80 80 The Nancy Mather that married Samuel Astley in 1814 was born about 1792 (so aged 22 about when married) and died Jan 1819, aged 27.  This is clearly another Nancy Mather.

This Nancy probably married John Horrocks, a weaver 6 Jan 1802. 

In 1841, Nancy Horrocks (not Knowles) was still alive, aged 70, with Mary (34), Margaret (27), Charles (24).  Then is listed James (34) with Betty (10), Adam (6), and Thomas (1).  They are living in Dean Street, L.B.

Nancy was still alive in 1851, born Walmsley, now aged 83

In 1857, Nancy Horrocks (another) was sentanced for "Murder". 1774 - 1829 Ann Mather 55 55 Ann may have married Richard Greenhalgh (weaver) or Peter Morris (both m.1806) or Ralph Isherwood (m.1811).  Ann and Peter Morris had 5 children baptised in Deane 1813-1824. However, Richard and Ann Greenhalgh had their children baptised at St Peters which is a better match.  There is also a matching death for Ann Greenhalgh.


 1779 Alice Mather Alice probably married John Walmsley in 1805. It cant be Samuel and Alice Mather in 1810 as that would be her nephew.  It cant be Alice and Hampson Lomax in 1813 as that Alice was a widow. ~1773 - 1840 John Horrocks 67 67 6 Jan 1802, John and Nancy were maried by a baptist minister.

After John and Nancy (or Nanny) married they probably lived at Chadderton. John (b.1804) and William (b.1806) are baptised at Middleton.  Then then had Elizabeth (b.1810) at Blackley.

There is a Nancy Horrocks alive in 1841 and 1851 but unclear if the same family, or which is correct. 1806 Mary Horrocks In 1841, Mary Horrocks (34, a Carder) was living in Dean Street, L.B. with her mother Nancy Horrocks (70), Margaret (27), Charles (24), James (36) and three children

Mary was 44 in 1851 (now married), born Bolton. 1814 Margaret Horrocks Margared may have been the daughter of Robert and Esther Harwood of Harwood, baptised 25 July 1813

In 1841, Margaret (27) was living in Dean Street, L.B. 1815 - 1881 Charles Horrocks 66 66 In 1841, Charles (24) was living in Dean Street, L.B. with his mother and siblings.

In 1844, Charles married Esther Isherwood (or Pilkington) at Bolton, RO/5/9. He did not marry Ann Knight in 1845 at St Peter (wrong father).

About 1858, wife Esther died.  This may have been Esther Horrocks that died in Blackley, near Middleton, aged 42.  Thay may have had children (MMN not indexed for Blackley)

In 1851 Charles (36 and widowed) was living with his brother-in-law and family at Back Chapel Streeet, L.B. 1804 - 1882 James Horrocks 78 78 James was 36 in L.B. in 1841.  Under his entry was Betty (10), Adam (6), and Thomas (1), so probably his children. 1807 - 1874 James Schofield 67 67 Thomas or James (1851 census is difficult to read), but compare John Ferguson (at bottom of page) and Tong with Halgh (birthplace), and its clearly a "J", not "T"

James and Mary didnt have their children baptised.  Most children died as infants (confirmed by burial records and GRO records naming MMN).

In 1851, James and Mary (43 & 44) were at 11 Back Chapel Street, L.B. with Mary's mother Nancy Horrocks (88), Brother-in-law Charles (34) and Betty and Adam Schofield (19 & 15) who may be his or possibly Mary's brother Charles (as implied by the 1841 census). 1831 Betty Schofield In 1851, Betty (19) was with her parents at Back Chapel Street, Bolton.

Betty was a cotton winder (like her mother).  She was unmarried, aged 38 in 1871, still in Little Bolton. 1836 - 1903 Adam Schofield 67 67 In 1851, Adam (15) was with his parents at Back Chapel Street, Bolton. 1840 Thomas Horrocks Birth records suggests Thomas was illegitimate, so probably son of Margaret, not Mary's

In 1841, Thomas was with the family, aged 1. 1787 - 1855 John Walmsley 68 68 This cannot the John and Alice from Pilling (as they had several children baptised before their Oct 1805 marriage)

14 Oct 1805, John and Alice Mather married.  It is the only Lancashire marriage to an Alice before 1814 (when Ann was baptised).  Where are the earlier baptisms?

Between 1814 and 1819, John and Alice had three daughters baptised at Egerton Chapel. Their abode in 1814 and 1816 is shown as Orrell Folds, and then Turton

July 1828, daughter Ann may have died in Blackburn, aged 14.

In 1851, There is a John Walmsley (b.1786, Turton) marred to Elizabeth and living at Queen Street, Wheelers Hill, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.

Three old John Walmsleys died in Bolton in 1846 (70), 1854 (73) and 1855 (68). 1814 - 1828 Ann Walmsley 14 14 1816 Mary Walmsley 13 April 1837, Mary Walmsley of Failsworth married  William Taylor, a corn dealer at Manchester Cathederal by licence.  This may be another!Q

Mary's marriage may have been earlier as Mary Walmsley married another William Taylor, a weaver 14 Jul 1833 at Deane.  Deane and weaver are a better match, but Mary was only 18, so perhaps she lied about her age.

15 Oct 1854, Mary Taylor, widow, daughter of John Walmsley, a weaver, married George Austin, spinner, son of William an engineer from Tyldesley.

In 1861, Mary and George Astin (48 & 49) were at Tyldesley with John and James Aster from George's first marriage and Ann Taylor (step-daughter, 19).
 1818 Sarah Walmsley Possibly died Newton-le-Willows, Wigan in 1888, aged 70.

This is NOT Sarah Louisa Walmsley.  She was born 27 Feb 1819 and baptised 4 Feb 1831, daughter of John Walmsley, a publican and Sarah. 26 June 1839, Sarah Louisa Walmsley, a minor, daughter of John Walmsley a coach proprietor, married Thomas Fawcett, an organist.

Sarah didnt died in July 1835. (That was a 60y old) 1816 - 1858 Esther Isherwood or Pilkington 42 42 In 1854, Esther Isherwood or Pilkington (so probably a widow) married Charles Horrocks.

By 1861, Charles was a widower, so Esther must have died.  The only Bolton death is for Esther Horrocks of Westhoughton in 1855, aged 30.  It appears that this Esther died shortly after giving birth to a daughter (unnamed), that also died. However, this is another Esther Gregory (1825-1855)  that married Joseph Horrocks.  Another Esther Horrocks died in N Bury in 1859, aged 53, but this Esther seems a little old.  There is also Esther that died 1858 in  Blackley, near Middleton, aged 42.  This is further away, but a better age match for Charles. 1770 - 1845 Richard Greenhalgh 75 75 The deaths of Richard (1845) and Ann (1829), both at Harwood, show Richard was born 1870.

13 Jan 1806, Richard Greenhalgh, a weaver, married Ann Mather.

In 1841, Richard (70, weaver) at Riding Gate, Harwood was with sons Robert (20), John (20), and also Mary (15) and Richard Greenwood (10). Neighbour was his son Thomas Greenhalgh (25, a collier)

WARNING: There are other Richard and Ann Greenhalgh families from Bury who had children baptised Eliz (1801), Marg (1803), Thomas (1805) and Ann (1807) and later; and also Ann and Rich. from Bolton with Mary (1800), Betty (1803), Frances (1805), Ann (1808), Margt (1810). 1785 Peter Morris WARNING: There must be two or more Peter and Ann Morris families, as there are several baptisms before their 1806 marriage.

In 1806, Peter Morris was a Reed Maker when he married Ann Mather.  In 1841, Peter Morris (55, Reed Maker) appears to be married to Charlotte (45) at Barn Street, West Bolton.

In 1841, Peter and Ann Morris (both 55) were at New York, Rumworth with James (25) and Betty (15) ~1785 Ann Mather In 1841, there is Ann Morris, aged 66, F.S. for Thomas and Betty Collins at Waterloo, Holcombe, Bury, which could be her!  There was also an Ann (60, weaver) in the Turton Workhouse. 1811 John Morris 1825 Mary Greenhalgh In 1851, Mary Ann Greenhalgh, 28, born Harwood was in the Turton Workhouse.

In 1861, Mary A Greenhalgh, aged 38, unmarried, born Harwood was in the workhouse. 1817 - 1842 Robert Greenhalgh 25 25 There are 6 Bolton marriages for Robert Greenhalgh between 1838 and 1842, so he may have married. 1820 - 1853 John Greenhalgh 32 32 Aged 20 in 1841 at Riding Gate, Harwood with father Richard (70)

It was another John Greenhalgh, a printer, illegitimate, that married Jane Crosley.  They were in Turton in 1841 with Jane's family and two sons Wright (3) and Zac (1).

NOTE: There is another John at Harwood Meddows in 1841, son of William and Ann.  This John, unmarried, lived with his younger sister Ann. 1826 Richard Greenhalgh In 1850, Richard Greenhalgh married Nancy Booth 1814 Thomas Greenhalgh In 1841, Thomas (25, a collier) was living next door to his father Richard (aged 70) at Riding Gate, Harwood.  With him were Susanna (20) and Aaron (6)

In 1851 John and Susannah (both 33) were at Scoul Fold,  Shuttleworth, Lancashire with a new son John (aged 3, born Harwood). 1818 Susannah Greenhalgh Susannah may be an illegitimate sister, not wife of Thomas, living with him in 1841 and 1851

In 1871, Susannah Greenhalgh (54, Wid, Cotton Reeler) was at Allsops Court, East Bolton with sons James and William (16 & 13). There is no common MMN for the sons so they may be illegitimate.

In 1881, Susannah Greenhalgh (60, Wid) was at 7 Shakespear's Court, East Bolton with son William (23). 1835 Aaron Greenhalgh Aged 6 in 1841 with Thomas and Susannah (25 & 20). 

NOTE: Another Aaron Greenhalgh was 10 in Turton in 1841, son of Thomas and Jane, and died in Turton in 1843, aged 12..

In 1851, Aaron Greenhalgh married Celia Coulton (Bolton RO).  He would only have been about 16 or 17.  However, this is another born about 1824, son of Robert and Martha 1848 John Greenhalgh 1796 - 1876 John Greenhalgh 80 80 There are also baptisms for Isaac and Jane (1813 & 1815), children of John and Hannah, but this John is a farmer at Bradshaw.  It may be the same person as Bradshaw and Harwood are nearby.

8 Nov 1820, John Greenhalgh, bleacher, married Hannah Bridge, spinster.

Baptism records show John was also a crofter. 

In 1841 John a bleacher and Hannah (both 45) were at Lee Gate, Harwood 1795 - 1869 Hannah (Ann) Bridge 73 73 1830 Leah Greenhalgh 1828 Stephen Greenhalgh 1824 Hannah Greenhalgh Unmarried with parents in 1861, aged 37 1822 Ellis Greenhalgh 1831 John Greenhalgh 1834 Susan Greenhalgh 1829 Richard Greenhalgh Tammy L Walmsley 1874 - 1874 James Walmsley 1m 1m In 1881, Jame's sisters were with their uncle William Fairclough.  James may have been adopted out as does not appear to be on the 1881 census.

In Oct 1874, James died, aged 2 months at Astley Bridge.  He is buried with both parents (who both died in 1876) at Astley Bridge. 1829 - 1876 James Walmsley 47 47 Another James Walmsley (23), b.1820, weaver, son of John a loomer, married Alice Crankshaw (18) in Preston 30 July 1843.

In 1851, James (22) was with his father John (57) at     
Ebenezer Street, Bolton

In 1861 John and James Walmsley (39 & 34) were boarding at 10 Lupton Street, West Bolton.  Both were handloom weavers.

22 Oct 1866, James married Margaret Ann Fairclough.  His marriage shows James is the son of John Walmsley, but this may be anotheer John Walmsley, possibly John's son.

In 1871, John and Margaret (43 & 28) are at 8 Argyle Street, Astley Bridge.

 1841 - 1876 Margaret Ann Fairclough 35 35 In 1866, when she married James Walmsley, Margaret of Astley Bridge was the daughter of James Fairclough, a blacksmith. Peter (brother) was witness.

In 1871 James and Margaret A (43 & 28) were at Astley Bridge with daughter Hannah (2)

In August 1876, Margaret Ann Walmsley died, aged 35 and was buried at Astley Bridge. 1805 John Walmsley John Walmsley is the son of Thomas Walmsley, a farmer from Longworth, Turton.  It is possible he is a nephew of John Walmsley of Turton, but not a missing son!  John had a brother Thomas of L.B. who married Ann Grime in 1841.  Robert Walmsley (another brother, a shop keeper) was witness.They also had a sister Ann who married in 1843.

24 Oct 1840, John Walmsley married Charlotte Pimblett, daughter of Samuel, also a farmer.

In 1841, John & Charlotte Walmsley (35 & 30) were farmers at Longworth Hall, Longworth, Turton

John and Charlotte had two children, Alice (1842-1844) and John (1843-1847), so no surviving descendants.

Charlotte died about March 1844.

18 Aug 1844, John Walmsley, widower, married Alice Makant, a spinster of Halliwell. 1811 - 1844 Charlotte Pimblett 33 33 John and Charlotte had two children, Alice (1842-1844) and John (1843-1847), so no surviving descendants.. 1817 Betty Walmsley Betty is probably a daughter of John and Alice Walmsley.

31 May 1841, Betty Unsworth, Widow, daughter of John Walmsley, a weaver married John Snelson son of Thomas (both sawyers) at St Peter's, Bolton.  In 1843, another Elizabeth, daughter of John Walmsley from Middle Hulton, also a sawyer, married Thomas Gillibrand.  This other woman was a spinster and Elizabeth, not Betty.

In June 1841 there are no Snelson families on the census.  There was John and Betty Nelson (35 & 30) with William (3) and John (4 mo), living at the Farmers Arms, Lever.  This is another family Betty Nelson, nee Welsby).

In 1844 Betty and John has a son Thomas Snelson. The MMN was UNSWORTH (but should be WALMSLEY).  In 1850, Robert was born with MMN correctly recorded as Walmsley.

In 1851, John and Betty (both 34) were at Lupton Street, W Bolton with Eliza Snelson (11) and Thomas Snelson (6). ~1817 James Unsworth 1817 - 1854 John Snelson 37 37 John, a sawyer, son of Thomas

John was a bit of a plonker!  In 1844 he registered the birth of Thomas with his wifes previous married name (UNSWORTH).  Perhaps he was keeping it quiet that she was married before and widowed ! 1844 Thomas Snelson 1850 - 1851 Robert Snelson 8m 8m 1854 John Snelson 1840 Eliza Unsworth In 1851, Eliza Snelson was 11 1815 Squire Walmsley 31 Mar 1839, Squiire Walmsley, son of John (both weavers) married Betty Bridge a minor at St Mary's, Deane.  Both were from Halliwell. John Walmsley John was a weaver when son Squire and daughter Betty married. Betty ~1821 Betty Bridge 1813 - <1881 George Astin 68 68 George was the son of William Austin, an engineer.

In 1837, George married Hannah Booth (born Heywood) at Rochdale, and after their marriage they lived at Heywood for 7 years before movng to Tyldesley.

In 1851 the George and Hannah "Austin" (37 & 34) were at Tyldesley with Sarah Boomlow (30, wid, lodger), Joseph Austin (26, brother), Thomas (10), John (9), Jamews (8), Maria (3).

Hannah died at Tyldesley in 1853.  Her death was registered locally at Leigh.

In 1854, the follow year of his wifes death, George married Mary Taylor, the daugher of John Walmsley. 1812 - 1851 William Taylor 39 39 In 1851, William and Mary Taylor (both 37) are at Christ Church, Bolton with daughter Ann (9) and lodgers (possible siblings) Joseph Taylor (wid, 28) and John Walmsley (Wid, 29).  Their son John was living with his uncles and aunts. 1841 Ann Taylor In 1851, Ann (9) was with her parents William and Mary Taylor (both 37) at 13 Back John Street, W Bolton.

In 1861, Ann, 19, step-daughter was living with mother Mary and step-father George Astin (or Austin).

In 1871, Ann Taylor, Step-daughter, 29, was with George and Mary Austin at 6 Cross Street, Tyldesley.

In 1881, Ann Taylor, Head, 39, was with her mother Mary Astin (Wid, 68) at 6 Cross Street, Tyldesley.

In 1882 Ann TAYLOR married Benjamin MEADOWS at Leigh Register Office or Registrar Attended (ROL/42/22).
 1842 - 1910 John Astin 68 68 1844 James Astin 1806 John Walmsley 8 April 1828, John Walmsley maried Margaret Walmsley at Church Kirk, Clayton-le-Moors.  Census records show they were both born at Clayton-le-Moors.  Other marriages between John Walmsley and Margaret Greenhalgh (1827, Bolton);  Margaret Duckworth (1829, Blackburn) and Margaret Yater (2826, Walton-le-Dale) are less likely.

In 1827, daughter Ann was born at Adlington.  The family then moved to Sharples where James and Charles were born in 1828 and 1829.

In 1841, John and Margaret (both 35) were at Lee Gate Lane, Harwood with Ann, James and Charles (14, 11 & 10). John Walmsley (60, labourer), possibly John's father, was living at Bradshargate.

In 1851, John and Margaret (49 & 50) were at Harwood, Bradshaw with Ann, James and Charles (24, 21 & 20).

In 1861, John and Margaret (both 59) were still at Harwood with daughter Anne (34, born Adlington) 1806 Margaret Walmsley John Walmsley maried Margaret Walmslet at Church Kirk, Clayton-le-Moors.  Census records show they were both born at Clayton-le-Moors. 1827 Ann Walmsley 1830 James Walmsley 1831 Charles Walmsley 1815 - 1853 Hannah Booth 38 38 1840 Thomas Astin 1838 Sarah Astin In 1851, Sarah Boomlow (30, wid, lodger) was with Sarah's parents, but this must be another older person, not their daughter. 1848 Maria Austin Aged 3 in 1851, born and living in Tyldesley 1834 - ~1835 Ann Taylor 1 1 1852 - 1925 Benjamin Meadows 73 73 Benjamin Meadown was the son of George Meadows (1828-1914) and Frances Lowe (1832-1876).

17 Sep 1870, Benjamin married Ann Ferrand at Leigh.  They had three children: Margaret (b.1871), Rosanna (b.1873) and Edmund (b.1875) before Ann died in 1880.

In 1882, Benjamin now a widow married Ann Taylor, a 41 year old spinster, although not too old to have a son John Willie Meadows in 1883.

His second wife Ann died in 1915 and Benjamin married a third time.  3 June 1916 he married Janet McBride. 1883 - 1963 John Willie Meadows 79 79 1916 - 2019 <male> Walmsley 102 102 1845 - 1845 Alice Taylor Alice died an infant and buried at Ridgway Gates Wesleyan, whe same cemetery as Samuel Mather (1794-1854), the only mather registered there, so they may be in the same grave. 1847 John Taylor In 1851, John Taylor (3, nephew) is with unmarried sisters Elizabeth and Alice Taylor (27 & 24) and their younger brothers John, Charles, William and Peter at 2 Folds Court, Little Bolton.

In 1861, John Taylor (13, nephew) was still with his Aunt Alice (34) and Charles, William and Peter at 7 Folds Court (next to George's Court)

In 1871, there are 11 John Taylors born Bolton 1847 +/- 1. Some are lodgers.

 1808 James Walmsley James Walmsley was the unconfirmed son of John and Alice.  There is no baptism record, but from 1805 to 1813 there were none for John and Alice.  However, it now seems more likely James is the son of John Walmsly and Tabitha Morris (married 1791).
