Richard's father was Matthias Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Brown. His paternal grandparents were Matthias (Mathew) Mather and Marcella Honeyford. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Alfred, Francis, May, Annie, Elizabeth, Emma, Ada and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 67 on March 16th, 1933 in Preston.²
