Ada was born in 1871 in Preston.1  Ada's father was Matthias Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Brown.  Her paternal grandparents were Matthias (Mathew) Mather and Marcella Honeyford. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Alfred, Richard, Francis, May, Annie, Elizabeth, Emma and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
