Mary was born in 1874 in Lytham St Anne's.1  Mary's father was Matthias Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Brown.  Her paternal grandparents were Matthias (Mathew) Mather and Marcella Honeyford. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Alfred, Richard, Francis, May, Annie, Elizabeth, Emma and Ada.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
