Alfred was born in 1864 in Preston.1  Alfred's father was Matthias Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Brown.  His paternal grandparents were Matthias (Mathew) Mather and Marcella Honeyford. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Richard, Francis, May, Annie, Elizabeth, Emma, Ada and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
