Elizabeth was born in 1867 in Preston.1  Elizabeth's father was Matthias Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Brown.  Her paternal grandparents were Matthias (Mathew) Mather and Marcella Honeyford. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Alfred, Richard, Francis, May, Annie, Emma, Ada and Mary.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
