Matthias was born in June 1838 in Bolton.1  Matthias' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Martha Challinor.  His paternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Helen and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the four children. He had three half-brothers named Thomas, Thomas and Henry.  He died in 1838 in Bolton.  He was buried in 1838 at Fletcher St Wesleyan Mathodist Chapel.2 1
