Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Martha Challinor. Her paternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. She had two brothers and a sister, named Matthias, Thomas and Helen. She was the third oldest of the four children. She had three half-brothers named Thomas, Thomas and Henry.
