Mary was born in March 1842 in Little Bolton.1  Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Martha Challinor.  Her paternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. She had two brothers and a sister, named Matthias, Thomas and Helen.  She was the second youngest of the four children. She had three half-brothers named Thomas, Thomas and Henry.
