Robert was born in September 1834 in Bolton and his christening took place there on November 30th, 1834.1 2  Robert's father was Josiah (Joseph) Mather and his mother was Amelia Vicars.  His paternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. He had a brother and two sisters, named Robert, Mary and Eliza.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 3 in March 1838 in Bolton.1
