Mary was born in August 1832 in Bolton and her christening took place there on August 12th, 1832.1  Mary's father was Josiah (Joseph) Mather and her mother was Amelia Vicars.  Her paternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. She had two brothers and a sister, named Robert, Robert and Eliza.  She was the oldest of the four children.
