Robert was born in June 1878 in Birkdale.1  Robert's father was Robert Vicars Mather and his mother was Margaret Emily Seeley.  His paternal grandparents were Josiah (Joseph) Mather and Amelia Vicars. He had a sister named Ethel.  He was the younger of the two children.
