Sophia's father was Richard Walmsley and her mother was Rachel Mather.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Walmsley and Martha Forshaw; her maternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Edwin, Fredric, Thomas, Martha, Mary and Caroline.  She was the second youngest of the seven known children.
