Richard's father was Richard Walmsley and his mother was Martha Forshaw. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Stephen, Mary, Elizabeth, Martha and Alice. He was the fifth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 76 in 1897.
