Thomas' father was Richard Walmsley and his mother was Rachel Mather.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Walmsley and Martha Forshaw; his maternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Edwin, Fredric, Martha, Mary, Caroline and Sophia.  He was the youngest of the seven known children.
