Sophia was born in 1845 in Bolton.  Sophia's father was Thomas Walmsley and her mother was Sophia Mather.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Walmsley and Martha Forshaw; her maternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. She had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Richard and Mary.  She was the youngest of the four children.  She died at the age of 52 in 1897.
