Mary was born in 1841 in Bolton.  Mary's father was Thomas Walmsley and her mother was Sophia Mather.  Her paternal grandparents were Richard Walmsley and Martha Forshaw; her maternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. She had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Richard and Sophia.  She was the second oldest of the four children.  She died at the age of 2 in 1843.
