Sophia was born in 1814 in Bolton and her christening took place on May 1st, 1814 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Sophia's father was Matthias Mather and her mother was Mary Priestley. She had six brothers and six sisters, named Samuel, Thomas, George, Mathew, Joseph, Edwin, Mary, Ellen, Rachel, Rachel, Caroline and Eliza.  She was the fifth youngest of the thirteen children. She had a half-sister named Ann.  She died at the age of 60 in 1874.

‌Sophia and Thomas were married in a religious ceremony on August 29th, 1837 at St. Peter's (Bolton) by minister A. Hadfield and witnessed by Thomas Bradshaw; Rachel Mather.2  They had two sons and two daughters, named Thomas, Richard, Mary and Sophia.
