Ellen was born in 1808 in Bolton and her christening took place on October 23rd, 1808 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Ellen's father was Matthias Mather and her mother was Mary Priestley. She had six brothers and six sisters, named Samuel, Thomas, George, Mathew, Joseph, Edwin, Mary, Rachel, Sophia, Rachel, Caroline and Eliza.  She was the sixth oldest of the thirteen children. She had a half-sister named Ann.
