Thomas was born in 1841 in Bolton.  Thomas' father was Thomas Walmsley and his mother was Sophia Mather.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Walmsley and Martha Forshaw; his maternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. He had a brother and two sisters, named Richard, Mary and Sophia.  He was the oldest of the four children.
