Frederick was born in 1859 in Southport.1   Frederick's father was Ralph Holding and his mother was Mary Ann Vickers Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Josiah (Joseph) Mather and Amelia Vicars. He had a brother and a sister, named Josiah and Amelia.  He was the second oldest of the three known children.
