Thomas was born in April 1830 in Bolton and his baptism took place on April 11th, 1830 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Thomas' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Betsey Green.  His paternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. He had five brothers and a sister, named Matthias, Joseph, Samuel, William, Charles and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
