Joseph was born in 1826 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on March 26th, 1826 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Joseph's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Betsey Green.  His paternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. He had five brothers and a sister, named Matthias, Thomas, Samuel, William, Charles and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
