Mary married Joseph in Oct 1794.  Another Mary Thorp married Samuel Marther 12 Nov the same year.
1798 - 1879 Thomas Mather 81 81 In 1841 Joseph (63), Thomas (40) and John (38) were all weavers at Kay Street.  Mary Mather (60) was listed seperately (after John Heaton), so may be Joseph's sister.

In 1851, Joseph and Mary his wife (both 73), Thomas (52) and John (50), all still hand loom weavers at 97 Kay Street, Little Bolton.

In 1861, Thomas was not with his father and brother John, so had possibly died. However, the only matching death record in in 1879, so he may have married Ellen Walkden in 1857 or Jane Dobson in 1858 (both RO). He may have been boarding with John and Hannah Hilton (63, Thomas, Silk Hand Loom Weaver, born L.B. but recorded as a Hilton)

In 1871, Thomas was 73, Unmarried, and a boarder at 210 Pikes Lane, West Bolton, a "Cotton Weaver at Home"

Thomas of Western Bolton died in March 1879, aged 81.  He is buried at New Bury Churchyard (near Farnworth), South of Bolton.
1807 Sarah Mather No burial for Sarah Mather, and not with family on 1841 census, so married James Clough (in 1829), Thomas Westby (in 1831) or James Cottam (in 1837).

6 Nov 1831, Sarah Mather married Thomas Westby (Packer of L.B.) and had daughters Mary in 1832 and Jane in 1834 and William in 1836.  Sarah was 43 in 1851 - Perfect! and Thomas 48.

Elizabeth Mather also married Peter Hilton the same day, so was this her sister and a double marriage?

Sarah & James Cottam had a daughter Martha in 1837. Sarah wife of James Cottam died in 1845, aged 30, so it cant be her as she was born 1812.

In 1894, Martha Taylor was baptised, aged 66. The parents ware recorded as John and Ann Mather.
1778 - 1864 Joseph (Joshua) Mather 86 86 WARNING: Parents are not confirmed.

We know Joseph and John were brothers because thay both had daughters named Betsy, and in 1881 the same informant, Joseph Allen, recorded both their deaths.

Joseph was born in Tyldsley or Tong in 1778 and baptised at Astley, St Stephen.

Joshua (and Jesus) are alternative early names for Joseph.  It appears then in 1805, he used the name Joshua, not Joseph to have is daughter Elizabeth baptised.  (The only UK Joshua and Mary marriage was in Derbyshire in 1789 and that Joshua was still there in 1841, aged 70).

In 1841, Joseph (63), Thomas (40) and John (38), all weavers were at Kay Street.  Mary Mather (possibly a sister-in-law) was 60.  His great nephew John Heaton (7) was living with them.

1835 - 1896 Margaret Hughes 61 61 1865 - 1867 Elizabeth A Westby 2 2 1873 Mary A Westby 1859 - 1915 Alexander James McDowell 56 56 1862 - 1923 Walter William McDowell 61 61 1866 William H McDowell 1867 - 1875 Elisa J McDowell 7 7 1870 John Thomas McDowell 1872 Charles E McDowell 1837 Alice Holt 1878 Eliza A McDowell 1856 - 1856 James Thomas Warburton 4m 4m 1818 - 1878 John Willis 60 60 In 1841, John Wilis (20) a brickmaker Journeyman was living with Daniel Willis (60) a Cotton Weaver at Swan Lane, East Bolton.

1818 - 1890 Jane Mather 71 71 Jane was Baptised 3 Jan 1819 with her brother Joseph, so probably twins, born Q4 1818. Her father John was a Machine maker, but recorded as a weaver on her 1843 marriage (a year after John had died), so possible wrong parents!.  She may be Jane b.1815, daughter of John Mather and Ann.

It's not confirmed who Jane was, exept she is the daughter of John Mather a weaver, and was born in Bolton about 1819.  She probably had a close brother John who was a marriage witness.  Jane may be one of the un-baptised Mather from Egerton, but more likely the daughter of John Mather and Ann Thompson, born 1818.

In 1841, Jane was not with her family.

8 Oct 1843, John Wallis, weaver, son of John Wallis a bricklayer married Jane Mather of Rumworth, daughter of John Mather.

In 1851, John and Jane were 31 & 32, living at Rumworth.

In 1881, Jane Clegg (66, born Little Bolton) and James (64) were living at 18 Pilkington St
1807 - 1871 Peter Hilton 64 64 There is a Peter Hilton baptised at Wigan, his father Peter was an Innkeeper at Upholland, Lancashire.  Later his father may have been a Wheelwright.  In 1851, this Peter Hilton, lodger, Widower, aged 41 was a Sawyer (i.e. a timber cutter) at Upholland.  In 1871, Peter is a Carpenter in Pemberton.  This cant be the Peter that emmigrated to the USA.

Peter Hilton married Elizabeth Mather 6 Nov 1831 in Bolton.  It was just in time, as Elizabeth (aka Betty) gave birth 2 months later.  Their marriage may have been a double marriage as Sarah Mather married at the same church, same day.  The marriage records are adjacent. However, they are not sisters.

In Jan 1832 when Catherine was baptised, Peter was a Chair Maker in Little Bolton
1832 - 1908 Catherine Hilton 76 76 Catherine Hilton aged about 2 imigrated to USA (probably via Canada) with her parents.

17 July 1908, Catherine (Widowed, 78) died in Minnesota.  She was actually 76 years old.
1833 - 1833 Grace Hilton 1814 - 1816 Hannah Mather 1 1 1824 - 1856 John Smith Peck 32 32 1807 - 1865 Elizabeth Mather 58 58 Elizabeth from Lowton had an adult baptism at Winwick in 1820 (aged 12).  She had an infant sister Nancy (b.8-Dec-1819) baptised the same day.

6 Nov 1831, Elizabeth married Peter Hilton (the same day Sarah Mather married Thomas Welsby). This may have been a double marriage as Sarah Mather married the same day.  However, it is now believed thay were not sisters.  Census records show the Elizabeth Mather sister of Sarah was born 1805 in Little Bolton and married Edmund Heaton.

Jan 1832 "Betty" had her daughter Catherine baptised (less than two months after the marriage)

In 1850 and 1861, Elizabeth and Peter (and Elizabeth's mother Grace) were in Racine, Wisconsin, USA.
1800 - 1839 Edmund Heaton 39 39 5 Sep 1825, Edmund Heaton married Betsy Mather.

1826 to 1833, Edmund was a weaver in Little Bolton

Edmund died in 1839 in Halliwell, aged 39
1805 - 1881 Elizabeth (Betsy) Mather 76 76 Elizabeth was baptised the daughter of Joshua and Mary Mather.  It seems probable the Joshua is Joseph.  This is supported by:
1) Joshua a possible alternate name for Joseph
2) Gap in births at 1805 for Elizabeth to fit
3) Double marriage of two daughters (Elizabeth and Sarah)
4) No marriage of Joshua and Mary (only Joseph)
5) No other Bolton baptisms with father Joshua Mather

Elizabeth was born about 1805 in Little Bolton.  It follows that it is this Elizabeth the daughter of Joshua and Mary Mather of Little Bolton, baptised 17 Feb 1805 that married Edmund Heaton.

Known as Betsy when married and for the birth of the first children, and then used the name Elizabeth from 1836 when Thomas and Sarah were born.

In 1871, Elizabeth Heaton (66, Wid) was at 10 Whittle Court, New Road, Halliwell with Alice Wood (78, occupier).

6 Jan 1881, Betsy Heaton, aged 76, widow of Edmund Heaton died at Back New Road, Halliwell, Bolton.
1829 - 1834 Mary Heaton 4 4 1841, Mary is missing 1838 Sarah Heaton In 1841, Sarah (aged 3) was with her mother and siblings Hannah (15) and Joseoph (12) at Pilkington Street, Halliwell.  John (7) was with his (great uncle) Joseph Mather (63, weaver) and Mary and Thomas were missing!

Another Sarah Heaton, aged 4, was living with George Slater (58) a bleacher in Sharples.  George has a son William (18), Hannah Scholes (51) and two female servants (or perhaps recorded twice).
