Elizabeth's father was Thomas Roscoe and her mother was Elizabeth Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Betty (Elizabeth) Cooper. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Albert, Walter, James, Alice and Sarah. She was the second youngest of the six children.
