Mary's father was Henry Isherwood and her mother was Sophia Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Betty (Elizabeth) Cooper. She had four sisters named Alice, Margaret, Esther and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the five children.
