Bertha's father was Joseph Thomas Ratcliffe and her mother was Mary Isherwood. Her maternal grandparents were Henry Isherwood and Sophia Mather. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Harry, Florence, Annie, Jane and Margaret. She was the second oldest of the seven children.
