Harry was born in 1888 in Breightmet. Harry's father was Joseph Thomas Ratcliffe and his mother was Mary Isherwood. His maternal grandparents were Henry Isherwood and Sophia Mather. He had a brother and five sisters, named Joseph, Florence, Bertha, Annie, Jane and Margaret. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
