Joseph was born in 1885 in Breightmet. Joseph's father was Joseph Thomas Ratcliffe and his mother was Mary Isherwood. His maternal grandparents were Henry Isherwood and Sophia Mather. He had a brother and five sisters, named Harry, Florence, Bertha, Annie, Jane and Margaret. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
