Margaret was born in 1898. Margaret's father was Joseph Thomas Ratcliffe and her mother was Mary Isherwood. Her maternal grandparents were Henry Isherwood and Sophia Mather. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Harry, Florence, Bertha, Annie and Jane. She was the youngest of the seven children.
