Charles' father was Charles Mather and his mother was Betty Crook. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Betty (Elizabeth) Cooper; his maternal grandparents were Daniel (Dan) Crook and Mary Walsh. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Joseph, Daniel, Maria, Alice, Ann, Jane, Sarah and Betsy. He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
