Joseph's father was Charles Mather and his mother was Betty Crook. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Betty (Elizabeth) Cooper; his maternal grandparents were Daniel (Dan) Crook and Mary Walsh. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Daniel, Charles, Maria, Alice, Ann, Jane, Sarah and Betsy. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 76 on December 23rd, 1935 in Droylsden. His burial was on December 28th, 1935 in Droylsden.²
