Elsie was born in June 1894 in Droylsden and her baptism took place on June 6th, 1894 in Openshaw.¹²

Elsie's father was Daniel Mather and her mother was Susannah Morris. Her paternal grandparents were Charles Mather and Betty Crook. She had three brothers and a sister, named Charles, Harry, Edward and Sarah. She was the second oldest of the five children.
