Thomas (35, bookkeeper, not from Lancashire) and Martha (25) in Victoria Place, Little Bolton in 1841. In Kirkstall (near Leeds) in 1849 (when Thomas born) and Headingley in 1851 Martha (48, widow), Helen and Mary in Hulme in 1861 Matthias was born in Wigan, yet baptised at Bolton Betsy and Matthias both died in Newton-le-Willows Iron Moulder in Derby Street. In 1841, there was also John (65) and George Mather (25) living in Derby street. Lives with: Mathias, Marcella and their daughter (or rather Joseph's/Josiah's? niece) Annie S are staying with Matthias's brother Joseph and Amelia in their Hotel at North Meols in 1851. Matthias also had a son Samuel born 1800 who came to Bolton. Lives with: in 1851, Annie S (Niece, aged 7) was living with her uncle Josiah and aunt Amelia at a Lord Street, North Meols.
She was listed under Matthias and Marcelle, so possibly adopted by them Representative of: In 1830, Sophia was witness to Josiah's marriage at Wigan to Amelia Vicars Lives with: In 1871, Mary Jane Fisher (2, Cousin) was in Birkdale with her cousin Robert V Mather Lives with: In 1841, Edwin was living with his brother Josiah. Named After Know each other: Possible Brothers
Both lived at Spring Gardens in the 1830s and 1840s, but not at the same time. ~1776 - ~1833 Mary Priestley 57 57 Marriage records of Edwin and Rachel (Lancashire OPC project) suggest Matthias’s wife was Mary Priestely.
It shows that both Edwin and Caroline share the names “Priestley” as a middle name.  This would most probably be their mother’s maiden name.  If Matthias is from Bradford, then Mary is proably also from there.

There is also a Mather family from Whitkirk near Leeds that had a Matthias baptised in 1780
1814 - 1874 Sophia Mather 60 60 Lived in Derby St, Great Bolton.

In 1830, Sophia was witness to Josiah's marriage at Wigan to Amelia Vicars

The Bolton Chronical (2 Sep 1837) reported Sophia's marriage:  On the 29th ult., at the Parish Church. Mr Thomas Walmsley, iron-monger, Deansgate, to Sophia, third daughter of Mr Matthias Mather, all of this town.
1827 Eliza Mather Eliza Mather was baptised 16 Sep 1827

In 1841, Eliza Mather was not on the Lancashire census.  She had probably died a young child.

7 Apr 1850, Elizabeth Jane Mather (21), daughter of Matthias Mather a mechanic, married Samuel Glassy Brookes (23), also a mechanic at Manchester St Mary.  At the time, both were living at 69 Bary Street, Salford.  This is another person, daughter of Matthias and Jane from Nottingham
1816 - <1861 Edwin Priestley Mather 45 45 Edwin Priestely Mather was a "Druggist, Grocers and Seedsmen" at Bolton-le-Moors in partnership with Samuel Parnell. The "Mather & Parnell" partnership was dissolved 24-Feb-1837.  Edwin married Ann Rich later that year.

In Dec 1839, the partnership between Matthias Mather and Edwin Preistley Mather, under the firm of MATHER & SON of Great Bolton, as Chemists, Drugists and Grocers was dissolved by mutal consent.  Dated 11th but reported on the 21st, about 4 days after Mathias died.  Edwin probably then continued the business alone.

In 1841, Edwin P Mather was living with his brother Josiah and Amelia in Blackburn Street, Bolton (West).

In 1843 "Edward" Priestly Mather was a Druggist at Leigh when Ann Sophia was baptised.
1827 - 1896 Mary Mather 69 69 1825 Richard Mather Richard married Anna (as shown on grave record)

23 July 1845, Richard Mather married Mary Ann Newman at the Collegiate Church, Wolverhampton.  They lived at Derby Street, Bolton, ans later, also at Dukinfield and Wigan and Southport and Farnworth.  They divorced 1873 after Richard threw his boots at his wife, and on another occasion hit her with a four pound loaf of bread and gave her a black eye, and threw a plate or porrage and other offences to his wife and daughter. He left for for another woman, Emily Henry. See divorce papers.
1805 - 1866 Matthias (Mathew) Mather 61 61 There's a marriage of Matthias (Widowed) to Ann Ironfield in 1835, but this must be another as Marcella was still alive, living in North Meols, Lancashire in 1861

In 1820, Mathias Mather and Mathias Mather jnr, both moulders, are listed at Derby Sreet, Bolton (in the Bolton Trade Directory).

In 1831, Mathias Mather (20) was at Howell Croft.

In 1841, Matthias & Marcella (both 30) were at Derby Street, with Richard (15), Mary (13) and Mathias (10)

In 1846 Matthias had the George Inn, Great Bolton (where an inquest was held). He was described as a publican when  Mary married in 1847

In 1851, Matthias and Marcells Mather (both 45), a landed proprietor, were living with his brother Josiah and Amelia, a Hotel Keeper, in North Meols.

n 1863 Matthias was renting a house at 11 Bold Street, Oldham leasehold for 99 years.  This may be another!  In 1868 he is also recorded as leasing a house in Preston.
1805 - 1871 Marcella Honeyford 66 66 1810 Josiah (Joseph) Mather In 1830, Josiah of Wigan married Amelia Vickers of Bolton by licence at Wigan Parish Church.

In 1831, Joseph Mather of Blackburn Street was on the L.B. Poor List.

In 1841, Josiah and Amelia (both 30) were living on Blackburn Street with Mary Ann V (8) and Robert V (8 mo).  His brother Edwin P Mather (25) was with them.

George was a Tailor in Little Bolton when he married 30 Oct  1844.

In 1851, George and Mary (46 & 47), tailor, were in Bolton with no children.

In 1861, George and Mary (54 & 55), tailor, were at 7 Marklands Buildings, E Bolton with no children.

1845 Eliza Jane Mather Eliza born in North Meols, near Southport (in the parish of Ormskirk) 1782 - 1864 Richard Walmsley 82 82 Richard was Blacksmith of Aughton, Ormskirk from 1815 to 1828 (according to several christening records). 

In 1835 (aged 53) he was recorded as a Yeoman (on Alices baptism record).

Richard was a farmer in 1837 when Thomas was married.

In 1861, Matthias (31, born Bolton) was married to Elizabeth with two daughters and cousin Mary Caldwell (56) and living in Preston

In 1851, Ann Mather (30) was a barmaid at the Railway Inn, Westleigh. With her was her sister Mary Rich (27) and daughter Mart (10), all born Wighan.

In 1861, Ann was a Widow, a boarding school proprietor with her daughters assistant and teacher.

1 May 1847 Rachel Mathe or Liverpool married Richard Walmsley, an Ironmonger, at St Thomas, Liverpool.

Rachel had 7 children: Their first, Matha was born in Liverpool in 1845.  The family then moved to Ormskirk where Edwin, Frederick, Mary Emma, and Caroline were born, before returning to Bolton in about 1857.  They then had Sophia (1859) and Thomas (1861).
1792 - 1847 Samuel Mather 55 55 Samuel was an Iron Moulder, but not from Lancashire (possibly Stalybridge, Cheshire where Maryanna lived) or Nottinghamshire where there is a baptism, son of Hannah. His son Thomas married in Warrington in 1836.

In 1841, Samuel (45) was an Iron Moulder at Dawes Street, East Bolton with son Ralph (15) and George (12).  Hannah (assumed mother), a dress mamker, was also present, aged 60. Samuel and Hannah were not from Lancashire.

Ellen died in 1841.  In 1842, Samuel Mather, Widower, son of Thomas, was at York Street and Phebe Williams, Widow at Princess Street, North Manchester when they married at Manchester Cathederal, and then moved to L.B. 



1780 - 1839 Matthias Mather 59 59 Mathias Mather was an important and successful person, listed at Howell Croft, Bolton in the 1818 Bolton Directory and 1821 directory.

In 1812, Matthias and Mary had a daughter Rachel baptised that must have died as another Rahcel was baptised in 1818.  Their last daughter Eliza born 1827 must also have died (missing from 1841 census), but there are no burial records for either of these two daughters.

In 1824, Mathias Mather, Iron Moulder is listed at 3 Derby Street in the Lancashire Gazetteer.

5 Jul 1835, Matthias Mather, Moulder and Widower married Ann Ironfield at St Mary's, Bury..

Matthias died in East Bolton in 1839, leaving an estate worth about £3,000
1803 - <1861 Thomas Mather 58 58 Thomas Mather is not from Lancashire. Because he is Yorkshire, lived in Bolton where wife Martha was from, and had a son Matthias, and born where there is a gap in the births, I suspect Thomas is a son of Matthias Mather og Bradford, but UNCONFIRMED.

In 1823, a Manufacturer when he married Mary Ann Sansom, and had their children baptised (all at Chorley).

In 1841, living at Victoria Place, aged 35, Bookkeeper

In 1851 Thomas (48) was a Clerk at Iron foundry (Headingley)
Born: Low Moor, Yorkshire, with wife Martha (38) from Bolton.
1813 Martha Challinor Aged 48 in 1861, born Bolton, widow, living at Hulme with daughters Helen (25) and Mary A (19)

Marriage recorded as Chalinor, but signed Challinor.  Witnesses were Margaret and Edward Challinor.  "Croston" only appears on the marriage record.  All other records show Bolton as place of birth.

In 1851, Matthias, aged 27 was married to Sarah and living at Barton upon Irwell.

Matthias of Salford, Iron Moulder, died 7 Oct 1867. His brother Samuel and son Samuel were executors.

Samue Matherl, moulder, was at Spring Gardens in 1818 (trade directory).  His father Mathias Mather (also a moulder) was at Spring Gardens on the 1811 census. and at 2 Howell Croft in 1814.

Samuel Mather, Moulder, was at Spring Gardens in the 1818 and 1829 Bolton directories.

In 1841, the family may have been in Liverpool (tbc). The Samuel, Iron Moulder, at Dawes Street is another

In 1851, Samuel (51, Married, born Yorkshire), Iron Moulder was a lodger at 18 Lever Street, Little Bolton (with Ann Hyde, aged 60 and others).

1788 - 1858 Ann Ironfield 70 70 Ann married Matthias Mather in 1835 and their mariage lasted four years until Matthias died in Dec 1839.

In 1841, Ann and Matthias's children are missing.  In 1841, Ann may have married William Mather (Deane) or David Simpson (Manchester Cathederal).
1834 - 1868 Ralph Holding 34 34 Ralph is the son of Richard and Sarah Holding from Whittle le Woods, Lancashire.

In 1855, Ralph married Sarah Ann V Mather at North Meols St Cuthbert.

In 1861, Rahph and Mary A V Holding (28 & 28) are at North Meols with Amelia (4), Frederick (2), Josiah (11 mo)

In 1881, son and daughter Richard H and Gertuude Holding (13 & 15) were with their uncle Robert V Mather at Ormskirk

Ralph, Bank Manager of Southport died Feb 1868.

William Fairclough was a Blacksmith, first at Bolton, and later Horwich.

In 1825, William married Mary Mather sy St Peter's, Bolton.  They named their first two children after William's parents and then Matthias after Mary's father.

In 1841, William (a Blacksmith) and Mary (35 & 30) were at Mawdsley Street, E Bolton with sons Thomas (12) and Matthias (10).

In 1851, William (a Blacksmith) and Mary (47 & 43) were still at Mawdsley Street with unmarried "relatives" Mary Ann Rothwell (38) and Betty Garside (17).  Matthias had joined the army.

In 1861, William and Mary (57 & 53) were at Church Street, Horwich.

Wife Mary died at Horwice in 1863.  William, now alone,  must have returned to Chorley which is were a death is registered in 1869, aged 65.
1807 - 1863 Mary Mather 56 56 Originaly thought to have married Robert Walsh, now believed to have married William Fairclough, and named their second son Matthias after Mary's brother and father.  Mary is from an Iron Mouder family, so its fitting she married a Blacksmith.

In 1841, William (a Blacksmith) and Mary (35 & 30) were at Mawdsley Street, E Bolton with sons Thomas (12) and Matthias (10).

In 1844, their son Thomas died, and sometime after that their remaining son Matthias Fairclough left home to join the army (as a private foot-soldier).

In 1851, they had Sarah Longfield (unmarried, 22) with them from Newcastle.  Also two "relatives" Mary Ann Rothwell (38) and Bessy Garside (17), both from Bolton.

In Q4 1838, Son Joseph's birth was registered at Bolto with mother recorded as Mary Gullan.

In 1841, Joseph and Mary (35 & 30) were at Spring Gardens, Bolton with son Joseph (3).  Mary was Irish.

In 1851, Joseph (of Wigan) and Mary (45 & 40), were at 8 Supton Street, Bolton with son James, aged 9 (no daughter).

In 1861, Joseph and Mary (both 50) are at 9 Hanover Street, Wigan. Joseph is a Coal Miner born at Aspull.  Mary is a Bonnin Minder from Ireland.  Many of the neighbours are also Irish.  Their son James and Nancy (20 & 19) are with them.  Although so much fits, other records suggest this in noa a mining family.

In 1871, Joseph Mather and Mary (68 & 63) were at 9 Partridge Street, Bolton with their son James, widower (30) and his two children.  Joseph was a brewer.

In 1881, Joseph Mather (77, Wid) was a lodger, recorded as a British Subject, born at Sea.  Is this him?
1834 William Mather ~1823 Sarah Foulkes Sarah was the daughter of John Foulkes from Bond Street, Liverpool, a Blacksmith.

23 Dec 1843, Matthias Mather son of Samuel both Iron Moulders  married Sarah Foulds of Bond Street at Liverpool, St Nicholas.
