Joseph was born in 1831 in Hulme (near Manchester).1  Joseph's father was Edward Hemmingway and his mother was Maria Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Abraham Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Swindells. He had a brother and three sisters, named Samuel, Hannah, Leah and Maria.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
