Hannah was born in 1829 in Hulme (near Manchester).1  Hannah's father was Edward Hemmingway and her mother was Maria Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Abraham Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Swindells. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Samuel, Leah and Maria.  She was the oldest of the five children.
