Leah was born in 1835 in Chorlton-cum-Hardy and her baptism took place on December 18th, 1836 at Manchester Cathedral.1  Leah's father was Edward Hemmingway and her mother was Maria Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Abraham Mather and Elizabeth (Betty) Swindells. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Samuel, Hannah and Maria.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
