George was born in September 1849 in Bolton and his christening took place there on September 9th, 1849.1 2  George's father was John Collings and his mother was Sarah Williams. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, Edmund, Ellen, Harriet, Mary and Happy.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
