Joseph was born in 1799 in Droylsden and his baptism took place on December 20th, 1799 in Newton Heath.1  Joseph's father was Abraham Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Swindells. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Sally and Maria.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
