James was born in 1796 in Droylsden and his baptism took place on June 10th, 1796 in Newton Heath.1  James' father was Abraham Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Swindells. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, John, Sally and Maria.  He was the oldest of the five children.
