John was born in 1802 in Droylsden and his baptism took place on August 2nd, 1802 in Newton Heath.1  John's father was Abraham Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Swindells. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Joseph, Sally and Maria.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
